COMPACT ELECTRIC DRILL

This project was developed as a student project and not on behalf of any company mentioned.

VISION

The power of a big machine in a compact cordless screwdriver.

Most households have one or more cordless screwdrivers, but due to inferior workmanship and quality, they are often not suitable for all household tasks. The goal was to develop a cordless screwdriver that, despite its handy size, had enough power to handle all the screwing and drilling tasks around the house.

TASK

Design of a compact cordless drill for a safe and comfortable use in the personal home environment.

MARKETING/ ACTION ANALYSIS

After a detailed market analysis, in which the brand leaders were studied, their portfolios analyzed and compared, an action analysis was carried out, in which a compact cordless screwdriver was studied in detail and applied in various user scenarios.

TEARDOWN

After studying the cordless screwdriver in detail, the next step was to understand the technical structure of a cordless screwdriver, so the cordless screwdriver was unscrewed and all the technical components were examined and sketched.

CAD REBUILD

Once the technical structure of the cordless screwdriver was understood, it was rebuilt in Solidworks. This task served as training for the subsequent development of my own cordless screwdriver.

THE MINIMALIST

This concept offers a standard set of features and focuses on a minimalist, functional design that emphasizes touch points.

This concept integrates all the functions that a cordless screwdriver can offer, making it an all-rounder where design and ergonomics are secondary.

DESIGN DEVELOPMENT

Tons of variations to evolve the design.

After deciding on the Agressive concept, I wanted to make it a bit more functional without losing the dynamics. The goal was to create a successful balance between simplicity and functionality while staying within the Fiskars design language.

WORK AREA LIGHTING

In order to work at any time of the day and under any conditions, the cordless screwdriver must have a useful lighting system that fully illuminates the work area during each application.

INNOVATIVE BODY SHAPE

The striking and innovative shape of the cordless screwdriver body not only ensures the best grip, but also protects the built-in technology from falls and external influences. In addition, all controls are color-coded and conveniently located to protect them in the event of a fall. 

BATTERY MANAGEMENT

The battery management for the cordless screwdriver had to be well thought out. I came up with the solution of interchangeable batteries combined with a tool case that doubles as a charger and power supply for the cordless screwdriver, so nothing gets in the way of a long day's work.

FEATURES

Toughest, most efficient cordless screwdriver its size. Typical for Fiskars.

BUILT IN TECHNOLOGY

To provide enough power for any home use, both for screwing and drilling, this cordless screwdriver is equipped with a brushless motor and a 2-speed planetary gear, powered by a 7.2 volt, 2.5 Ah battery.

INTERFACE

Special attention has been paid to the invisible connection, which contributes to the minimalist overall impression. Adequate ventilation for the brushless motor is provided by the hidden ventilation integrated into the floating head element, which includes a spirit level and battery status indicator.

TORQUE ADJUSTMENT

Although smaller than the competition, the torque control is easy to grip and intuitive to adjust thanks to the highlighted lever. This not only improves ease of use and ergonomics, but also makes the design much more minimalist.

TOOLBOX

Charger station and tool case in one unit.

In addition to safely storing the cordless screwdriver and two spare batteries, the toolbox doubles as a mobile charging station that charges the batteries and cordless screwdriver when not in use, providing all-day power.

PROTOTYPING

Building a true-to-scale and realistic-looking prototype with attention to even the smallest details.

The parts created in SLA were sanded and then reworked to be primed and painted. Finally, the parts were glued together and branded with logo and detail decals.

PRESENTATION

All projects are presented to the public at the Semester Exhibition at the end of each semester.

In addition to an informative banner with explanatory texts and renderings, the model is also presented, in this case in its original size, so that it can be directly subjected to a hands-on test.
