12h Challenge - Outdoor Speaker

VISION

Development of an extremely rugged speaker for outdoor use - in 12h

As a daily challenge, I dedicated myself to the topic of speakers and just wanted to see how far I could get in 12 hours of work. Here you can see that the focus was clearly on the fast design and that a detailed market analysis and a long-term design process were not possible due to the time pressure.

RESEARCH

A very short research phase to get a quick overview of the market 

Special emphasis was placed on the study of outdoor models and a rough understanding of the technical structure. The main features and potentials for a particularly robust loudspeaker were collected and finally implemented directly in the design.

CONCEPT SKETCHES

Direct translation of potential into a coherent design.

Due to the time pressure, this step was significantly shortened in order to quickly enter the CAD setup. Small details were tested and implemented directly in CAD. 

FEATURES

Highly durable speaker with distinctive design language

TARGET GROUP

The speaker is aimed at outdoor enthusiasts who place particular value on the high quality and workmanship of their equipment. Soft-to-the-touch materials such as leather and metal create a special music box for connoisseurs.

SELF REPAIR

In addition, the special housing design with the discreetly placed screw connections encourages the speaker to be screwed apart. In this way, not only can the speaker be easily repaired, but it can also be upgraded and better components can be used.

SOPHISTICATED DESIGN

A well thought-out design language makes the "X" clearly recognizable as a distinctive feature and plays a clear role not only in terms of design, but also functionally in the form of the minimalist protective cover.

LEARNINGS

A thrilling challenge with great fun factor

I’m amazed at the results I was able to achieve in 12 hours of work. I find the housing separations and the integration of the screws particularly successful. However, I am dissatisfied with the control element, which I would have designed differently if I had had more time.
